This was also late because the drama came out 2 years ago. I was happily browsing Viki one day and spotted this Taiwanese drama which is a total gem!
I just personally think the English title sounded common and not an accurate representation of what the Chinese title meant. 星光下的童话 is loosely translated to: Fairytale under the stars whic h probably sounded more poetic than 'Because Of You' - which only reminded me of Kelly Clarkson's hit song lol
Anyway, I happen to scroll over a few screenshots for the description of this drama. It seems promising and I had good impression of Baron Chen's performance in Fated to Love You & the Jay movie Kungfu Dunk. So I thought of watching this drama who was also starring other good lookers.
I love the way how these four characters metone another. Ok la, the acting is a bit cring-worthy but if you look beyond the acting, the storyline is very relatable, at least for me since it's about the entertainment business.
Rising singer-songwriter Fang Zihao is Chinese Music latest pop sensation. Tongtong is your typical fan girl who will skip her job, faking illness just to catch Zihao's concerts, autograph sessions (Somebody who I used to be :X) Apparently, it was later revealed that both of them used to be from the same hometown and she is the President of his fanclub.
On the other hand, we have stuntman Sun Fan who was acting as a stunt double for Fang Zihao in his latest MV. Sun Fan's grandfather owns a Chinese Martial Arts / Medical Hall and therefore he dreamed of becoming a martial arts star but presently he could only do stunts. He has a very pretty model girlfriend Xingye Zhen who's a mix Japanese-Chinese. Both of them are very in love and have dreams of the future together.
One day, when Sun Fan was after a debt - his father is a creditor (a nice way of Loan Shark). His father wanted to pass on the 'financial business' to his son but being close to his grandpa, he only wanted to become a martial artist. So anyway, he went to collect a debt and that person was Tongtong who pulled a prank on him, only for him to be escorted by the police.
Through a series of unfortunate events, Tongtong lost her job as a makeup artist and found a new job at Sun Fan's dad's office! Mr Sun was very impressed by Tongtong's ability to collect debts and wanted her to talk sense & influence his son. That's the start of 日久生情.
Meanwhile, Xingye has always wanted to venture out more than just a car model showgirl, she has the ability to write songs and sing decently but do not have luck to get to know producers or has network in the entertainment biz. Since Sun Fan was half-in-entertainment-biz as a stunt man, he was informed that Fang Zihao was looking for MV lead/newcomer to groom and decided to get his girlfriend to try it out. Despite missing the audition, she was still given a chance by Fang Zihao.
Total swoon-ness at every scene between Fang Zihao & Xingye Zhen. I swear. It's really manly & swoon-worthy.
Because of a traumatizing childhood of losing his parents, he is fond of concealing his feelings. He is a professional artiste in front of the media & camera, he is a demanding boss toward his production team, he is perfectionist and wouldn't settle of second best. But all these were slowly changing when he met Xingye Zhen.
He groomed her. He told her he doesn't like her being a showgirl. He bought her modeling contract. He decided to produce her album. He wanted her to guest perform at his concert. He gave her many designer clothes, shoes, bags and a limited edition mobile phone so that he could call her whenever he likes :P
He kept emphasizing that he's just being a professional & impartial boss who reward those who does well and punish those who didn't perform up to his high standards. As audience, I was also a little confused by his true intentions - whether was he using his position/status as a boss and commanding to see her whenever he likes, even if it's outside of job hours & scopes?
Being a newbie model/artiste, Xingye Zhen doesn't really understand the complications but come on, tell me you're not 心动 when a 年轻有为，当红炸子鸡 is showering you with so many gifts & so much attention with his deep gazes?
Xingye Zhen isn't a materialistic character, she just wanted to become a singer based on her own ability and she believes all she needs in a chance and Fang Zihao was willing to give her one, using the excuse of 'because of work'.
Of course, Fang Zihao doesn't believe in love, he believe it's just hormones acting up and for the sake of producing music, he's willing to compensate 'buying love' by giving her expensive gifts. Pretty warped thinking if you ask me.
Xingye Zhen loves Sun Fan but because her dreams are more important to her and therefore she had to give him up. Sun Fan felt that she has 'already made her choice' and decided to get over her. His chance came when he was talent scouted by some veteran Director who wanted Sun Fan to star in his movie.
So Sun Fan became a 'somebody' as well and sought revenge towards Fang Zihao whom he believe to have stolen his girlfriend made him want to do anything for a bigger fame/popularity than Zihao.... but it failed. Here's where you can see the dirty things manipulative ppl do within the entertainment scene as depicted in the show.
In a twist of fate, Zihao became a fallen star and lost fans and dropped by producers & endorsers but Tongtong continued to support him and gave him encouragement. Here's when Sun Fan felt Tongtong plays an importantly role in his life when she goes to another guy...
And the rest you'll just have to watch. I don't want to be spoiler hehe...
I feel that this drama deserve more attention despite all the newbies in the show. Like I mentioned, if you're not too critical with the acting, the storyline is still worth giving a chance and there are really a lot of swoony/melty/gushy/fluttering scenes...
