The Making of A Modern Drama Serial
Typically, a drama is about 20 episodes on the average.
In my opinion the ideal number of episodes should be 11-15, anything more would be quite draggy, UNLESS it involves with lots of characters/roles. But that's another story =).
After working on the analysis about What I like About Periodic Drama, I though I would try on about a modern drama one. It applies to 当今偶像剧 as well.
1. Doctors/Nurses/Hospital
It won't be a drama without hospital and I conclude as THE NUMBER ONE place to appear in a drama serial. Be it what drama, I can CONFIRM, GUARANTEE that DIE DIE the hospital will appear at least once throughout EVERY drama out there! WHY?
In order to have story plots, it can be developed through several illnesses. For one, Cancer. Cancer will always play a part for 生离死别 scenes, or 自暴自弃 scenes which lead on to something else audience can imagine la.
Then there's those who lost memory once after certain accidents, or those suicidal cases due to stress or relationship problems. See? So many things can happen in a hospital not to mention those medical HK drama like 妙手人心 and E.R and etc.
2. Police/CID/Police Station
Also another CONFIRM, GUARANTEE and DIE DIE will appear in at least once throughout EVERY drama out there in the world! Police Station is also another popular theme drama. Cos it's also another place where lots of things can happen and for the plot to develop.
If you're able to trace the relations: jealousy, rage, rob, kidnap, gun shots, murder, crime. Makes sense? And then PI will be involved, and then WPU (Witness Protection Unit) will be involved, pathologists/research laboratory will be involved too.
Many many mysteries would be uncover in order to find out the real murderer. Wahaha!! I guess novels are usually written that way hence drama are filmed it this way as well.
3. Lawyers/Prosecution/Lawyer's Firm/Supreme Court
This is also closely connected with no.2. When there are crimes, lawyers would be needed. And then there would be hearings, lawyer VS lawyer. Probably some defendant are celebrities and will attract the media/reporters eh? Of cos lawyers not only just defend for crimes, there are also lawyers who fight divorce cases, as well as those announcing a will after death of his client. A lot la! Haha!
4. School/Campus
If it’s a family drama, most likely the leads would have kids and have scenes like sending or fetching kids to & fro from school. Even if it’s not in pri/sch sch standard, if it was a teeny ou xiang ju, mostly like it would be filmed in high school or even tertiary education! Surely will come out in dramas as well…
5. Office premises
If office working premises doesn’t appear in a modern drama too, I really would chop my head off. Storyline will develop like office romance, or some vicious rumours spreading in a particular department, lady boss/young working chap, flirtatious male boss/innocent female secretary. Wahaha!! You can imagine all the politics and dept VS dept kinda scenario, just think of all the possible situation and it will probably be shown on TV! Stupid sia~
6. Restaurant/Café
If there are school & office premises, there confirm is having breaks at canteen, café. Or at the restaurant meeting clients, or even wedding proposals made at a posh place. Maybe a rich guy would 包下整个餐馆 just to please his dreamlover. Or probably as a 打工 place for those part-timers after school or something.
7. Vehicle/Roads Surely
there would some driving cars scene on the roads. Like picking your love from his/her work place, it’s late and you drive dreamlover home, or you just got into a quarrel and would drive in high speed (then viola accident, hospital etc u go imagine la!) or delivery goods or whatever…haha!
I analysed until no.7, I find that dramas are really so typical. So perhaps it's cos I'd watched too much and it's becoming so predictable de. Scriptwriters can think of more innovative plots anot??
8. Beach/Resorts
A place for everyone & anyone to relax and let their hair down in case they face stressful stuff everyday like work, relationships, parents etc. Or confessions made at a beach or something and other surprises, watching sunrise sunset, romantic atmosphere to speed up the process! Hehe! Correct?
9. Birthday/Anniversary/BBQ/Surprise
Ahaha...seems like some point of time in the plot, there's bound to have birthday parties or celebration of any one of the leads inside. Choosing of present and the things to say and the place to have the celebration are all important factors on whether or not the male & female leads will get together.
Or if not then celebration anniversary, getting diamond rings and preparing a nice meal together etc. BBQ is also another alternative for family gathering or classmate gatherings with lots of sparks fly all over the place, sending signals & signs! Hahaha...
The more I type and go on with it, the more 老套 I think scriptwriters have become. And I kept wanting to laugh cos it's all so predictable...
10. Shopping Mall/Cinema/pak tor places
If there’s any romance in a drama, these scene are bound to appear and IT JUST SO HAPPEN that EVERY DRAMA available in the market globally has romance in the plot. Giving out free tickets and asking dreamlovers to turn up, either they turn up or don’t. then lead would be sad…or if they’re already couples, probably they go pak tor at the movies and something will happen, or shopping together, trying out clothes and realized blablablablablabla……
