It's been a while since I'd seen such compelling Drama drama!

I mean, it really is full of drama & action about birth story, about concealing attempt murders, about the evil ppl plotting against other and I'm talking about is the makjang with high ratings (at broadcast time 2 years ago) Baker King, Kim Tak Goo.

It basically revolves around the world of Baking in early Korea in, possibly 70s that includes sibling rivalry, company politics, family politics.

This page (photos posted here also also credit to it) summed up the story very well with clear analysis. But I'd like to add my own words:

Backstory of the first-generation
Story begins with President Gu Il Jong, successful businessman in baking industry/owner of Geo Sung Bakery, entered a marriage with a woman, Mdm Seo (EVIL WOMAN! ARGH!) he doesn't love her one single bit as it was his mother's decision because she feels the woman is able to help in President Gu's career.

After having 2 daughters, the MIL puts pressure on Mdm Seo to have a son if she wants to be First Lady of Geo Sung (the family food business). Meanwhile, President Gu has growing affections with his mother's young caretaker who is a nurse, Kim Mi Sun. After a drunken night, President Gu couldn't contain his feelings and sorted after Ms Kim. All of these were witnessed by his mother, who didn't mind if her son has an affair with other woman if she is able to produce a son.

Dying to produce a son, Mdm Seo decided to have affair with President Gu's GM, Manager Han who has always lust over the pretty Mdm Seo. Of course, both of them kept their relationship under wraps. Later, Mdm Seo discovered Ms Kim was pregnant and was horrified to know MIL knows everything. She has gotten Manager Han to try to get rid of Kim Mi Sun as she couldn't do it herself because she was pregnant as well. Manager Han decided to let Kim Mi Sun off and gotten her to promise never to appear ever again.

Alas, Kim Mi Sun gave birth to a boy, Kim Tak Gu. So did Mdm Seo, who finally produce a (illegitimate) son, Gu Ma Jun. The boys will later grow up to be our male leads with Tak Gu being the protagonist and Ma Jun being the antogonist.

After 12 years of living with his mom, Kim Tak Gu grew up to be a diligent boy as he was brought up well by his mom. Twist of fate, Tak Gu accidentally sneaked into President Gu's factory. President Gu like this kid and was shocked to know his name because that was the name he wanted to name Kim Mi Sun's son when she asked him for his opinion how to name their child before she was forced to escape the clutches of Mdm Seo & Manager Han.

One day, she decided not to continue with this life anymore and decided to bring Tak Gu to live with President Gu. It wasn't an easy decision for her and the fact that she was entrusting her kid in the hands of her enemies. The Gu Family was obviously hostile towards Tak Gu who planned to escape back to his mom.

By chance, President Gu discovered Tak Gu's talent, a strong sense of smell and was accepting towards him and show him things that Ma Jun would never have the chance to, not in a million years. The most dramatic moment has to be when MIL witnessed Mdm Seo & Manager Han secret rendezvous and was horrified to hear that Ma Jun was the offspring of the both of them! She went to confront them and in midst of scuffle, she fell and went unconscious

Guess what, little Ma Jun was actually around when everything happened. He knew he wasn't his father's son and he was disgusted to know that his biological father is Manager Han and he even saw his mother pushing his grandmother to the ground! It was an obvious trauma for a child! And the story till here was just the childhood era.
